Summer activities: Maths is everywhere

26-07-2022

Between July 4 and 8, the Department of Mathematics and the NOVA Math-Center for Mathematics and Applications provided 15 pre-university students with internships that showed how mathematics is everywhere.

The Mathematics of Human Behaviour during an Epidemic, Crossing the Asteroid Belt and Inverse Problems were the internships that allowed them to experience scientific contact with mathematics. The students were invited to model an epidemic, to build a simulation model or to reconstruct parameters of a model from a set of data obtained by computer simulation.

The researchers who accompanied these activities were Paula Patrício, Paulo Doutor, Nelson Chibeles Martins and Nuno Martins.

These internships took place in the scope of the Ciência Viva no Laboratório program, in which FCT NOVA has participated since 1997. This year the School provided 30 internships to 126 secondary school students, which allowed them to have contact with the world of research and support in the decisions for their academic and professional future.

In addition to these internships, the Department of Mathematics offers two summer schools with the aim of deepening knowledge in the area and guiding students on professional opportunities and applications of mathematics. They are MatNova, to be held in September, and MathIngenious, which took place between 6 and 8 July.
