Portuguese Navy visits research centres at NOVA FCT

04-07-2023

NOVA FCT was one of the first stops on the 2023 edition of the EA-IDEIA Roadshow (Research, Development, Experimentation and Innovation Monitoring Structure of the Navy), organized by the navy. The purpose of this initiative is to foster collaboration between the Navy, academia, and industry and provide opportunities for partnerships and cooperative initiatives that promote the identification of open and collaborative innovation projects.

"We received this invitation with great pleasure. Currently, given the areas of interest, there is a considerable potential for collaboration with the Navy. Hence the challenge and the interest to see what more can be done," said José Júlio Alferes, Dean of NOVA FCT, at the opening of the session.

Captain João Lourenço da Piedade presented the "Navy's Innovation Ecosystem" and the theme of this edition of the Roadshow, which focused on the areas of Robotics, Signal Processing and Artificial Intelligence.

"The navy has a very recent history of innovation. There was a perceived need to create events that would allow for greater synergy with academia and industry to leverage this innovation," explained Capt.

The delegation had the opportunity to visit some of our research centres, in particular NOVA LINCS; CTS; I3N and CERIS NOVA, to tour around their laboratories and to learn about the research dynamics promoted at the Caparica Campus, with direct contacts with researchers.

The meeting, wich took place on July 3rd at the UNINOVA auditorium, was attended by representatives of the Navy, idD Portugal Defence, IAPMEI,AED Cluster Portugal - Aeronautics, Space and Defence and the NOVA FCT Directorate.
