NOVA FCT organizes summer school dedicated to machine learning in the space industry

01-08-2023

From September 1st to 8th, NOVA FCT will host ML4Space, a Summer School dedicated to machine learning in the space industry. For one week, students and professionals from the sector will explore the latest applications of machine learning in space.

The ML4Space Summer School brings together renowed speakers and leading researchers from the space industry who will showcase engineering and computer science innovations and address major topics such as pattern recognition, data analysis, the issue of space debris, and the presentation of deep learning and machine learning tools. Among the invited international specialists are mathematician J. Nathan Kutz from the University of Washington (USA), known for his research in data analysis and computational science; aerospace and mechanical engineer Massimiliano Vasile from the University of Strathclyde (Scotland), a pioneer in optimization techniques for complex aerospace engineering systems; and robotics professor and aerospace engineer Zachary Manchester from Carnegie Mellon University (USA).

The program aims to clarify the fundamental principles of machine learning in space and includes a panel discussion with experts in the field, such as Manuel Heitor, former Minister of Science, Technology, and Higher Education and professor of Mechanical Engineering, and representatives from GMV and Neuraspace, the portuguese project leading the development of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning for space traffic management, a crucial contribution to avoiding satellite collisions and space debris.

"The ML4Space summer school is an incredible opportunity for those seeking to deepen their knowledge in machine learning applied to the space sector. Moreover, the fact that it takes place in Portugal makes it even more special, as it offers a chance to meet new people and explore various technological backgrounds in a country that has been increasingly prominent in the technological landscape. It is an opportunity not to be missed to learn from and connect with professionals in the field," said Cláudia Soares, a professor from the Department of Computer Science at NOVA FCT and Coordinator of the ML4Space Summer School.

ML4Space is organized within the scope of the Artificial Intelligence Fights Space Debris project, co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan and the European NextGenerationEU European Funds.

Registrations are open until August 15th for researchers, Master's or Ph.D. students, and professionals from the space industry who aim to develop their machine learning skills. More information can be found at the link.
