Ana Furtado awarded for innovative research in sustainable materials with supercritical fluids

09-09-2025

Researcher Ana Furtado was awarded an Honorable Mention in the 2024 Doctoral Thesis Prize in Supercritical Fluids by the International Society for the Advancement of Supercritical Fluids (ISASF), during the 14th International Symposium on Supercritical Fluids & 9th Congress of the International Solvothermal and Hydrothermal Association (ISSF–ISHA 2025), held in Bali, Indonesia, from June 15 to 20, 2025.

Ana Furtado earned her PhD in Sustainable Chemistry from NOVA FCT in 2024 for her work on the development of sustainable affinity materials for detection, catalysis, and bio-purification, using two environmentally friendly technologies: supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO₂) and mechanochemistry (ball milling). Her doctoral research was supervised by LAQV REQUIMTE researchers Raquel Viveiros and Teresa Casimiro, as well as by Vasco Bonifácio from iBB, IST/ULisboa.

Ana Furtado’s work has been recognized by multiple international bodies, including the BES Travel Fellowship, ITC COST Actions, MDPI Materials 2024 Travel Award, FLAD “Papers@USA”, 5th YERUN Research Mobility Award 2022, and 3MT–ISSF2022, reflecting her significant contribution to sustainable chemistry research and green technologies.

She is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Sensor Engineering Department, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Maastricht University (Netherlands), where she develops new sensors for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.

This distinction reinforces the role of NOVA FCT and LAQV REQUIMTE in training outstanding researchers, capable of creating innovative and sustainable solutions with international impact.
