Postgraduate Programme in Marine Sciences, Technology, and Society

OPEN CALL FOR THE 2ND EDITION OF THE POSTGRAD MSTS

The NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA) creates the Postgraduate programme in Marine Science, Technology, and Society (MSTS) framed in the typology of specialization course, according to the definition contained in article 2 of the Regulation of creation and operation of non-degree awarding courses at FCT NOVA.

The 2nd Edition of the Postgraduate programme in MSTS will start on 3rd January 2023, and has the duration of 8 months. The MSTS includes:

- coursework (60 ECTS)

- international internship at Oslo Metropolitan University (OsloMet, Norway)

- national internship at Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere, I.P. (IPMA, Portugal)

- twelve seminars with international and national experts in MSTS

- field and lab work

- Project in MSTS

Objectives

The Postgraduate programme in MSTS aims to form graduates or professionals seeking to improve solid transdisciplinary skills in fundamental and applied areas to the objectives of sustainable development, specifically, in the ecological, technological and sociocultural aspects of marine activities and the protection of marine living resources.

The course, specifically, aims to train students to:

a) Apply innovative methodologies and technologies to solve problems associated with the exploitation of marine living resources;

b) Plan, implement, and evaluate projects and technologies applied to the sustainable exploitation of marine living resources;

c) Promote knowledge transfer and innovation, active citizenship, and marine environmental literacy guided by Blue Growth;

d) Reflect and have a critical sense of the technical, ethical and social implications of the activity, from a systemic perspective of Science, Technology and Society;

e) Know-how to communicate marine scientific and technological knowledge clearly and effectively;

f) Know-how to analyze, plan and actively participate in multidisciplinary teams.

During the coursework, students will be exposed to numerous modules covering several topics of marine science, technology and society, and underpin the capacity to perform independent research through the project component integrated in internships at top level labs (FCT NOVA, OsloMet and IPMA). In addition, the course will also strengthen skills on scientific communication and analytical/critical thinking.

The completion of the Postgraduation in MSTS will enable students to pursue a wide range of career opportunities in the government agencies that manage coastal and marine resources and environments, research institutes, fisheries and aquaculture industry, marine technology private companies, and as consultants for companies that seek marine specialists.

In addition, the Postgraduation in MSTS can support those seeking career progress by upgrading skills, or underpin career changes by moving towards a position more oriented to decision making or management and promote links between marine science, technology innovation, and society towards the Blue Economy.

Schedule

The postgraduation course is scheduled at post labor hours.

Course Structure

The programme is divided into two quarters of 4 months duration each that will be occupied by sequential modules of different subjects.

During both quarters, students must attend and successfully complete numerous compulsory modules covering:

- Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Processes

- Ecosystem Services in the Blue Economy

- Marine Social Sciences

- Blue Governance and Community Entrepreneurship

- Sustainable Assessment for Blue Economy

- Applied Robotics and Artificial Intelligence

- Marine Pollution and Climate Change

- Marine Living Resources and Sustainable Fisheries

- Marine Food Systems

- Marine Aquaculture and Technologies

- Marine Litter and Sustainable Waste Management.

In addition, students will participate in international and national internships within the OsloMet and IPMA institutions. During the internships, students will be integrated in on-going research projects, run independent work on topics related to marine and maritime research. At the end of the course, students will present a final Project in MSTS.

Admission rules:

Applicants should have the 1st cycle of higher study in marine sciences, biology, environmental engineering, or in another relevant field such as: chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology, climate and atmospheric sciences, geosciences, geography, geology, fisheries, aquaculture, or natural resource management and social sciences.

In addition, candidates should also be proficient in English, have capacity to carry out independent work and be available for both international mobility and presence-based courses.

Holder of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognised by the Scientific Committee of the Postgraduate programme in MSTS, attesting the capacity to carry out this education programme.

Funding

The Post-graduation in MSTS is funded by the EEA grants (PT-INNOVATION-0070) through the Project MSTS Education programme (https://mstsproject.com). The funding covers expenses for students:

- Tuition fees at NOVA SST

- Internships travel and accommodation

- Seminar Cycles with national and international experts

About the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering

The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (DCEA) at NOVA FCT started in 1976, with the launching of the Environmental Engineering course, a first of its kind worldwide. Over the past 40 years, DCEA has been able to adapt to the extraordinary evolution in this area, expanding the scope and expertise to tackle new environmental and sustainability challenges of the 21st Century. DCEA provides several courses (bachelor, master and doctoral courses) in the broad area of environment and sustainability, guided by scientific and technical quality, preparing the students for the national and international markets. DCEA also promotes R&D, assumed as a key pillar of teaching, by supporting national and international projects and an extensive network of collaboration with industry and public administration. DCEA coordinates several education programmes under the EIT Climate-KIC, namely the Journey, the Climate Innovation Leadership program and Pioneers in Practice.
