FCT NOVA students conquer 1st and 3rd prizes Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge 2017

The 2014 edition of the Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge - a contest of ideas promoted by Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS, with the aim of motivating and rewarding ideas born in Portuguese higher education institutions - finished the 8th edition with the Fraunhofer Portugal 2017 event.

In the MSc category, the 1st place winner was Rafael Simões, a student The Integrated master in Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, who developed an automated measurement of lesion charge and cerebral volume in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans of patients with Multiple Sclerosis. The dissertation entitled "Application of Quantitative Methods of Magnetic Resonance in Evaluation of Lesion Load and Brain Volume in Multiple Sclerosis" was directed by Dr. Rita Nunes from FCUL, and the neuroradiologist Joana Graça from CHLO - Hospital Egas Moniz.

João Ferrão and his paper-based biosensor for glucose sensing won the 3rd place with the dissertation: “Application of low-cost technology Lab-on-Paper to nonenzymatic colorimetric biosensors for glucose detection” oriented by Professor Elvira Fortunato from the Research Center CENIMAT/i3N.

Every year, Fraunhofer Portugal AICOS boosts new scientific knowledge by awarding the students and researchers in Portuguese Universities by their new ideas born out of MSc or PhD thesis, in the fields of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Multimedia and other related sciences. The applicants came from 21 Higher Education institutions, from all over mainland Portugal, as well Madeira and Azores.
