One of Lisbon's most charismatic districts has been the subject of a study under the Smart-Sustainable District (SSD) Program, funded by Climate-KIC. With the motto "transforming cities, one neighborhood at a time", the project, coordinated by FCT NOVA, analyzed Alfama and identified 17 proposals to face social and climatic challenges the area faces.

The results of the first phase were released in June and were subject of an extensive report in the magazine "Edifícios e Energia". Among the conclusions, can be found the integrative nature of intelligent energy efficiency and renewable energy measures, circulatory systems for water use and management and waste, in housing with controlled rents, urban gardens, a community platform mobility solutions and universal accessibility.

The SSD-Alfama project is a European project supported by a collaborative network between several European cities in Southern Europe.
