FCT NOVA at Phosphorus Night at the Pavilion of Knowledge

02-05-2019

On the past April 30th, Ciência Viva, in partnership with the Portuguese Chemical Society, celebrated the Phosphorus Night, the first chemical element produced in laboratory.

The Night served to celebrate the 150 years of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements with various activities scheduled around the theme.

FCT NOVA did not miss the call and was present with the Periodic Table in Patchwork. The work, involving elements of the Chemistry Department of the Faculty, was first shown on February 20th, 2019 at FCT NOVA's Library with the presence of Professor Christopher Brett, Vice-President of IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry).

"The work received great interest and" astonishment "for its originality from the audience that came to the Pavilion of Knowledge", says José Moura, Director of the FCT NOVA Library, one of the organizers of the celebrations around the International Year of Periodic Table of Elements in FCT NOVA, along with the direction of the Chemistry Departement.

The United Nations and UNESCO marked 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table, celebrating 150 years since it was created by the Russian chemist Dimitry Mendeleev. This resolution recognizes the importance and growing global awareness of how chemistry promotes sustainable development and provides solutions to global challenges in the fields of energy, education, agriculture and health.

FCT NOVA, through the Chemistry Department and the Library, joins this global party with an intense and diverse agenda. Know everything that will happen to celebrate this date here.
