Sir Martyn Poliakoff, world-renowned Chemist, will be at FCT NOVA on July 23rd

Sir Martyn Poliakoff, of the University of Nottingham (UK) will be at FCT NOVA's Main Auditorium on July 23rd at 12h00 with the lecture "Mendeleev's Gift to Education (and to me)". The day before, NOVA's Rectory will celebrate its presence with the Honoris Causa Doctorate Ceremony.

The scientist is worldwide recognized as a leader in Green Chemistry for his contributions to the development of processes with supercritical fluids and it was by his suggestion that in 2019 the 150 years of the Periodic Table of the Elements are globally celebrated. In addition to all his professional achievements, the chemist has been at the forefront of videos on the 118 chemical elements that have surpassed 190 million views.

He is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Engineering and of the Institute of Chemical Engineers of the American Association for the Advancement of Science of the Royal Academy of Engineering , Honorary Member of the Chinese Chemistry Society, Associate Fellow and Honorary Member of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Doctor Honoris Causa by the Technical University of Tallinn (Estonia).

Sir Martyn Poliakoff has served the Society in these high positions, was also Secretary of Foreign Affairs and one of the Vice Presidents of the Royal Society of the United Kingdom and of the Commonwealth Academy of Sciences from 2011 to 2016.

His intervention integrates the Elemental Talks on the Periodic Table promoted by the Department of Chemistry and the Library of FCT NOVA within the framework of the celebrations of the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements (IYPT).

The Honoris Causa Doctorate ceremony of Sir Martyn Poliakoff will take place on July 22nd, at 11H00 in the Campolide Campus Auditorium. Here, Ana Aguiar Ricardo, President of FCT NOVA's Department of Chemistry, will pay tribute to Sir Martyn Poliakoff.  Manuel Nunes da Ponte, Full Professor of the Chemistry Department of FCT NOVA and recently honored at the Ciência 2019 Meeting,  will be Sir Martyn Poliakoff's best man at NOVA's Rectory Honoris Causa Doctorate ceremony.
