Jorge Carvalho, the Regional Secretary of Education, Science, and Technology of Madeira, visited NOVA FCT on June 23rd to learn about the Artificial Intelligence course, integrated into the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) and taught at NOVA FCT, as well as to identify potential partnerships.

The meeting was attended by José Júlio Alferes, Dean of NOVA FCT, Nélia Câmara, Director of the School of Executives, Nuno Parreira, General Director of Samsung for Portugal, Nuno Almeida, Head of Mobile at Samsung Portugal, Aneesh Zutshi, Assistant Professor at NOVA FCT and Coordinator of the AI Program at Samsung (SIC), and António Coelho, Data Scientist and NLP at Closer Consulting, and professor at SIC.

The representative of the Madeira government has been leading the digitization of education in the autonomous region, implementing a program that provides digital textbooks to students from the 1st to the 3rd grade. "We have been driving the educational system for future generations. One of our main objectives now is to ensure that teachers have the necessary digital skills to respond to the challenges of the classroom," explains Jorge Carvalho.

"Samsung is a partner of the regional government of Madeira in a project that is considered a case study. It is the most advanced solution for digitizing secondary education," says Nuno Parreira.

"The Faculty has a great tradition in artificial intelligence (AI). In addition to being the origin of the first computer engineering course, we were the origin of the first AI research group. Currently, the School has several ongoing AI projects funded by Europe or national sources and many in partnership with companies," explains José Júlio Alferes, Dean of NOVA FCT. "We are a school that has always focused on innovation and technology transfer," he adds.

"One of the strategic points of the School of Executives is the focus on reskilling and upskilling as a way to minimize talent shortage. As a public school, it is our duty to give back to society with what we do best, never forgetting that we are a school of engineering and sciences," says Nélia Câmara, Director of the School of Executives at NOVA FCT.
