2nd edition of the "UP Programme" awards NOVA FCT research into sustainable forest management

09-11-2023

A NOVA FCT project, in collaboration with CEABN — Instituto Superior de Agronomia, is one of the five winners of the second edition of the "UP — Higher Education Programme" of the Fundação Luso Americana para o Desenvolvimento (FLAD).

Out of around twenty applications, the project "Urban and peri-urban forests as nature base solutions for mitigating the effects of climate change", led by Teresa Calvão, professor and researcher at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, was one of the five winners who will now share 150,000 euros. The grant will be used to implement and develop the planned initiatives.

The proposal submitted by the School aims to develop a partnership between a consortium of two Portuguese higher education institutions, NOVA FCT and Instituto Superior de Agronomia, and Northern Arizona University, School of Forestry (USA) for the execution and sustainable management of urban and peri-urban forests, as a affordable global solution for mitigating climate change.

The changes that are affecting the planet are global in scale and require concerted responses and actions from the international community to be effective. In fact, the fight against the climate crisis is increasingly a collective challenge. This proposal aims to encourage joint research by scientists and students from both countries and to boost the internationalisation of the institution.

The UP - Higher Education Programme, an innovative programme launched by FLAD in 2022, aims to promote the internationalisation and modernisation of Portuguese higher education institutions.
