NOVA FCT project secures funding in UTAustin Portugal Call for Exploratory Projects Programme

12-12-2023

Rui Pedro Ribeiro and José Paulo Barbosa Mota, professors and researchers from the Department of Chemistry, are responsible for the exploratory project that secured a financial allocation of approximately 50 thousand euros.

Among the 37 eligible proposals for the Call for Exploratory Projects within the UTAustin Portugal Programme, only eight were recognized. This highlights the significance and quality of the NOVA FCT research proposal, which secured the top ranking from the Call Jury.

The project, submitted in the Nanomaterials for New Markets category and titled "3D Printing of Nitrogen-Rich Nanoporous Coals for CO2 Capture by Electric Swing Adsorption," presents a disruptive approach to preparing materials with high CO2 capture potential and low cost. These materials will be developed in partnership with C. Buddie Mullins, professor at UT Austin (USA). It is anticipated that this project will establish the foundations for a low-energy consumption CO2 capture process based on high-performance materials.

The funds allocated to each project range from 19,400 to 50,000 euros, totaling an investment of 368,771.80 euros from the Foundation for Science and Technology's budget.

The competition, designed to support research teams from non-business institutions in the National Scientific and Technological System, as well as the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), aims to promote collaborative research in the main scientific areas outlined by the UTAustin Portugal Programme.
