Since the first production laser pumped by sunlight, in 1966, the performance of such lasers has improved with advances in optical materials and lasers. So far the applications of this "laser sustainable" in space has not been much considered. However, this notion is about to change with the recent increase in brightness, 6.6 times higher than the previous record achieved by the research team of CEFITEC (Teacher Liang Dawei, Joana Almeida and Dario Garcia) from the Department of Physics Solar Laser of FCT-UNL, whose work was referenced in LaserFocusWorld:http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/print/volume-49/issue-12/world-news/novel-lasers-solar-pumped-nd-yag-lasers-getting-brighter.html With this breakthrough, future applications in space communications, materials processing at high temperature, among others, are likely to benefit from this type of lasers.
