The European Material Research Society´s immediate past president, Professor Rodrigo Martins, explains to Pan European Networks how materials have a crucial role in creating a better life for all.

In this interview to the magazine "- Pan European Networks: Science & Technology", Professor Rodrigo Martins addresses the question of the establishment of the "European Affairs Committee" of the "European Materials Research Society “and its important role of building bridges between politics, politicians dealing with science and university and industry stakeholders. The reason for this decisive importance is due to the growing population and industrial explosion that leads to an increasingly greater use of materials with the consequent scarcity.

In this context, the Commission has addressed issues such as the strategic objectives for a sustainable future, the rational use of materials, exploration of materials taken to the extreme of its features, especially at nanoscale, what implies the development of similar systems using at least components with 100 times less material than in the past. A better materials integration, better design and promote a long-term materials’ replacement are also been addressed.
