Due to the inescapable legacy of the University in this area, the City Council has decided to award the Gold Medal of the City to NOVA University Lisbon. The ceremony will take place this Saturday and will be attended by the Rector of NOVA, João Sàágua, and the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Elvira Fortunato.
"It is with great honour and satisfaction that I come to announce that, due to the unavoidable legacy that it has already built, and which we are sure will continue to build, in the territory of Almada and its people, not only in the Faculty of Science and Technology, for more than 40 years, but also in numerous projects with the public and private sectors. For this reason, the City Council of Almada, in an extraordinary session held on the 5th of June, unanimously decided to award the Gold Medal of the City to NOVA University Lisbon", reads the invitation addressed to the Rector of NOVA, João Sàágua, for the ceremony to be held this Saturday, 24th of June, in the presence of the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
The awarding of this badge, the highest distinction granted by the municipality, recognises the importance of NOVA University Lisbon in the life of Almada and its people, which in 1980 took on the challenge of bringing the largest campus in Europe to Monte de Caparica, where it currently studies. more than eight thousand students, and throughout these decades has continuously collaborated with the municipality in the cultural and sustainable development of the territory.
This award is particularly relevant in this year of commemorating the 50th anniversary of Almada's city status - and also the 50th anniversary of NOVA University Lisbon.
