High school students learn about the composition of food supplements

06-11-2023

Students at the Henriques Nogueira School in Torres Vedras had the opportunity to learn about food supplements. From the origin of the various elements to their commercialisation, rigorous study is required to ensure their properties remain unchanged and beneficial for human consumption.

Fernando Reboredo, a professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, was the NOVA FCT ambassador who introduced high school students to the importance of research and laboratory study of the products that make up food supplements. The professor has devoted much of his research to topics such as plant biology, biofortification, forestry and ecotoxicology.

The visit is part of the school's initiatives to strengthen collaborations with high schools. Since 2015, NOVA FCT has been promoting the "Embaixadores" (Ambassadors) project, which aims to present the scientific research behind teaching. In the same context, the School also promotes personalised visits to the Caparica campus with the "Vem Ver" programme, an open invitation to discover the world of academia and research.
