10-01-2024

On 8 January, the National Long-Term Strategy to Combat Energy Poverty was published in the Diário da República (Official Gazette). The government's proposal includes references to direct work by NOVA FCT researchers.

This documentaiming to eliminate energy poverty by 2050, highlights the significance of the ongoing European efforts, designating this endeavor as a political priority. The European Union has been actively championing initiatives like the Energy Poverty Advisory Hub4 (EPAH), led by João Pedro Gouveia (CENSEDCEA). The strategy points out that, at present, an estimated 1.8 to 3 million people in Portugal are grappling with energy poverty, with 609,000 to 660,000 experiencing severe energy poverty.

Furthermore, the document underscores the relevance of the Energy Poverty Vulnerability Index, a tool developed by CENSE since 2017 with annual updates. This index serves as a crucial mechanism for evaluating and mapping the vulnerability of the Portuguese population at both parish and municipal levels.
