João Magalhães appointed Co-Programme Director in Portugal of CMU-Portugal

João Magalhães, professor at the Department of Computer Science and researcher at NOVA LICS, has been appointed Co-Programme Director in Portugal of CMU Portugal. The NOVA FCT professor and researcher now shares the leadership of the international partnership with Inês Lynce, from INESC-ID.

The overall mission of the Carnegie Mellon Portugal Programme (CMU Portugal Programme) is to promote industry-academia relations as a driver of change with economic and social impact in the area of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

The Programme focuses on the area of Information and Communication Technology with particular emphasis on areas related to big data processing, including Data Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Language Technologies, Data Analysis, Cloud Computing and Engineering and Public Policy.

The professor and researcher has coordinated and participated in several research projects on foundational models of vision and language, multimedia search, multimodal conversational AI, and multimodal temporal models. His research group's work was awarded 1st and 2nd place, respectively, in the Amazon Science Alexa TaskBot Challenge, a conversational AI challenge to incorporate multimodal data (voice and vision) from the user, in 2020 he won a best paper award at the Portuguese NLP conference (PROPOR), in 2018 he received two nominations for best paper at the ACM Int'l Conference on the Theory of Information Retrieval and the ACM Int'l Conference in Multimedia Retrieval.
