07-05-2025

Rita Pires, a PhD student in the Food Science Doctoral Program at NOVA FCT, was awarded the Best Poster – Young Professional Award – by the Scientific Committee of the 3rd International Conference on Application of Radiation Science and Technology (ICARST 2025).

Her award-winning poster, entitled "Boosting Chlorella sorokiniana Bioactive Compounds: the Role of Gamma Radiation", explores the impact of gamma radiation on the growth and nutritional profile of the microalga Chlorella sorokiniana. The results showed that the application of this technology increased the concentration of bioactive compounds, particularly alpha-linolenic acid – an omega-3 fatty acid with well-known nutritional value.

This is the second Best Poster Award received by Rita Pires as part of her doctoral research journey.

ICARST 2025 took place in Vienna, Austria, from April 7 to 11.
