Be an ICT woman for one day

FCT NOVA, through the Department of Informatics (DI) and the research center NOVA LINCS, joined another initiative aimed at promoting gender equality in the professional areas related to engineering and technology, especially IT.

Within the scope of the project "Engenheiras por um Dia" (Women Engineers for a day), sessions about what is Computer Engineering in the perspective of a professional woman in the area were held.

On April 4th, at the “Agrupamento de Escolas Professor Reynaldo dos Santos” (Vila Franca de Xira), Catarina Gralha, Ph.D student in Computer Science, spoke about her personal and professional career to an audience of about 100 students of the 9th grade.

Teresa Romão, professor and researcher at FCT NOVA, and Joana Páris, student of the Integrated Master in Computer Science, organized a session, also on April 4th, at the "Alfredo dos Reis Silveira School" (Seixal), for about 45 students from the 9th grade, addressing the reasons of this initiative, stressing the importance of making informed career choices and showing examples of important contributions from various women in the ICT and Information Technology areas.

DI and NOVA LINCS have been developing various initiatives to promote gender equality in the professions related to Informatic Engineering, such as “Girls in ICT” and the “Technovation Challenge”.

FCT NOVA participates in the 2nd edition of the project "Engenheiras por um Dia" integrated in the National Strategy for Equality and Non-Discrimination "Portugal +Igual" which aims to sensitize girls to the fields of technology and engineering in order to combat occupational segregation by gender and to promote these areas among secondary school students.
