FCT NOVA is present at the Oceans Conference promoted by the United Nations

Between June 27th and July 1st, the Parque das Nações in Lisbon hosts the Oceans Conference, promoted by the United Nations, with the support of the Governments of Portugal and Kenya.

NOVA School of Science and Technology is present in this mega-event that brings together, in our country, representatives of the 193 UN member states, financial entities, non-governmental organizations, and civil society, in a meeting to discuss and present solutions to save the oceans and the future of the planet.

June 27th 

Oceans Series Masterclass: Fast Fashion To Ocean Action!

This masterclass brings together global science and technology early-stage entrepreneurs and ocean advocates in order to spark innovation and accelerate sustainable solutions.
We'll talk about ocean acidification and the socio-environmental consequences of fast fashion and think about solutions to incorporate sustainable practices into your own startups or ideas in order to scale up ocean action.
The masterclass will be facilitated by Tierney Thys, an American Marine Biologist, National Geographic Explorer, Ocean Advocate, and Co-Founder of Around The World in 80 Fabrics, a nonprofit organization that addresses micro-plastic pollution and other socio-environmental consequences of fast fashion and celebrates the diversity of nature-friendly fibers.

Ocean Demonstrations

MARE participates in the Ocean Demonstrations initiative, which gathers national and international institutions in short demonstrations of technology used for the study and exploration of the Ocean, taking place during the whole meeting.

National Meeting of the Blue School "Creating Good Wave Generations"

MARE, as a member of the Scientific Commission of the Blue School program, will be present at the event "Creating Good Wave Generations", which will bring together the entire Blue School Community in the Pavilhão do Conhecimento.

June 28th

Antarctica, microplastics and conservation photography: How Portuguese researchers are leading international marine research and public engagement in ocean protection.

In a 90-minute online session, three MARE researchers - José C. Xavier, Paula Sobral and Nuno V. Rodrigues - will reveal the three societal challenges for promoting ocean conservation and potential solutions to them, moderated by "90 Seconds of Science" journalist Adriano Cerqueira. June 30th 

 Bachelor’s of the Ocean

A pioneer multidisciplinary degree, taught in English, which aims to promote the interdisciplinary study of the Ocean. The new degree results from a partnership between NOVA School of Science and Technology, FCSH NOVA, Nova SBE, Nova IMS, NOVA School of Law and the University of Algarve.

Lia Vasconcelos and José Carlos Ferreira, professors and researchers of the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering of FCT NOVA, are among the invited speakers. Lia Vasconcelos will intervene in the session "Blue Governance - Collaborating for a Blue Economy" and José Carlos Ferreira in the panel "Nature-based Solutions for a Coastal Sustainable Climate Change Adaptation".

MarLEM Workshop - Master in Maritime Logistics & Atlantic Knowledge Triangle

Presentation of the MarLEM project and its key results: the Master in Maritime Logistics, a joint educational offer from FCT NOVA and Escola Naval, and the Atlantic Knowledge Triangle, which brings together entities from Industry, Academia, and Authorities for the development of skills in the maritime area.

Stand MarLEM

MarLEM (Maritime Logistics Engineering and Management) is a project funded by the European Commission (European Maritime and Fisheries Fund) within the Blue Economy concept, in which NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA and Escola Naval are its academic partners. Its main objective is to bridge the gaps between higher education offer in the area of maritime logistics and the needs of the labor market.

This space will be especially dedicated to the Master in Maritime Logistics, taught at NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA and at the Naval School. It is an innovative course, of only one year and designed for people with more than 5 years of professional experience, that intends to provide its students with a fundamental set of knowledge in Industrial Engineering, Maritime Management, and Logistics. The stand will be open on June 30th and July 1st.

ARNET Exhibition Area

MARE is a coordinating member of the ARNET Associated Laboratory, which will have an exhibition space on the theme "5 days, 5 challenges for the Ocean". On each day of the conference, ARNET will highlight one of the 5 societal challenges that guide the thematic lines of this laboratory: TL1-New Approaches in Aquatic Exploration and Monitoring; Environmental Challenge | TL2-Environmental Sustainability under Global Change; Health Challenge | TL3-Environmental Risk Assessment and Management; Economic Challenge | TL4-Biotechnology and Nature-based Solutions for the Blue Economy; Social Challenge | TL5-Governance, Citizen Science and Ocean Literacy. Each day, the exhibition space will highlight a selection of national and international research projects developed for the sustainability of the Ocean. To this end, it will have the presence of six researchers, two from each UID partner of ARNET: MARE, CIMA, and CBMA.

Coastnet Exhibition Area

MARE will participate in the context of the Coastnet Research Infrastructure (part of the National Roadmap of Research Infrastructures). Coastnet will have an exhibition space where topics that focus primarily on Ocean observation and mapping will be addressed.

Of Flags and Nets: Education for Sustainable Development as a hook for local community development

Event organized by ABAE, focusing on the power of networks at the local level for community empowerment and for creating a positive social and environmental impact on the surrounding coastal context. MARE participates with the project "Nem tudo que vem à rede é peixe (Not everything that comes to the Net is fish)".
