Master in Civil Engineering

Objetivos

The Master in Civil Engineering (MEC) of FCT NOVA provides the necessary training for a career in Civil Engineering. Our graduates will be able to plan, design, build, rehabilitate, manage or audit public and private constructions, such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, foundations, roads, railways, ports, airports, dams and other hydraulic works, or even intervene in areas such as land use planning, civil protection and the development of construction products.

This course provides the graduates with the technical knowledge and skills to respond to the current challenges of a built environment that is intended to be safe, comfortable, durable and sustainable, in line with the United Nations' sustainable development goals.

FCT NOVA's MEC has a flexible curricular structure. The student can opt for a personalized course structure or a specialization in construction, structures, or geotechnics. The speciality contents have a rigorous and up-to-date approach, so that the students can acquire the necessary skills that will allow them to successfully pursue a career in civil engineering. In addition to the strong training in Civil Engineering topics, the MEC of FCT NOVA includes complementary cross-training (entrepreneurship and soft-skills). The completion of the dissertation allows the expansion of skills in the area of speciality but also in terms of personal skills such as autonomy, ethics and communication.

Recent graduates by FCT NOVA are highly valued by recruiters from design and consultancy offices (buildings, hydraulic works, transport infrastructures, heritage rehabilitation); construction and material production companies; project management and inspection offices; and government organisations.

Sobre o Department of Civil Engineering

The Department of Civil Engineering (DEC) was established in 1996. Today it offers a bachelor’s in civil engineering (3 years), four 2nd cycle Master Programs in Civil Engineering and in Structures and Geotechnics (2 years), Building Rehabilitation (1.5 years) and Facade Technology (1 year), and a PhD program in Civil Engineering (3 years). In parallel DEC has developed specific “lifelong learning” and graduate courses in the field of Sustainable Construction and Rehabilitation, and Rehabilitation of Railway Infrastructures.

DEC develops scientific and technological research activities with national and international partnerships, participating in R&D projects in several areas, such as Structural Concrete and Masonry; Structures Retrofitting; Structures under Extreme Events; Numerical Simulation of Structures; Ecoefficiency of Construction Materials; Energy, Comfort and IAQ Performance of Buildings; Building Pathology and Rehabilitation; Geotechnics; Road Pavements; Spatial and Urban Planning.
