PhD in Education

Program in partnership between the Universidade Nova de Lisboa' schools NOVA School of Science and Technology and Nova School of Social and Human Sciences with ISPA (University Institute of Applied Psychology).

Started in the academic year 2009/2010. The minimum number of credits needed to obtain the grade is 180 (3 years).

Objectives

The Advanced Studies Diploma in Education is awarded at the end of the 1st year of studies (60 ECTS) to students who:

a) Demonstrate ability to systematically understand problematic issues and research in educational;

b) Prove to hold complete capacity regarding research methodologies in education;

c) Confirm having domain in reflective learning , critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas;

d) Communicate with their peers, with the academic community and society in general on education issues and problems, with clear ideas and arguments, thus contributing to the development of a knowledge-based society.

In addition, the degree of Doctor of Educational will be awarded after the writing and defense of the doctoral thesis to students who:

e) Carry out original research work that contributes to extend the frontiers of knowledge and part of which deserves national or international dissemination in publications with a selection committee.

The Doctoral Program in Educational serves as a training course for students who intend to carry out original research leading to PhD thesis, contributing to the formation of researchers and innovation processes leaders in scientific research and at the same time for the training of teachers and other education professionals who wish to deepen their knowledge in education but do not intend to proceed to the writing of the doctoral thesis.

Curricular plan and functioning

The PhD degree (60 ECTS) with a duration of one year, is focused on acquiring skills and knowledge in four areas:

a) Reflection on the educational phemomena and issues underlying them;

b) Training in research methodologies in education, aimed at providing conceptual and operational tools for the study of educational phenomena;

c) Training in two subjects, one in each half of the 1st year of nine course specialties;

d) The writing of a thesis, guided by a teacher, that may take many different shapes, according to the regulation.

 After concluding a PhD, the doctoral student will in future focus on developing an original research work (120 ECTS), under one of the specialties, framed in the lines or research projects of one of the three research centers involved in this doctoral program. His research work will then be supported by seminars and tutorials, individually or together with other doctoral students.

Admission rules:

It is possible to apply for the Doctoral Program in Educational:

a) The master's degree holders or legal equivalent, such as teachers and educators at all levels of education, technical education and training, social workers and educators at health areas;

b) Bachelor degree holders with a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum recognized as attesting the capacity to accomplish this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council;

c) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized as atesting capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council.

 

Place and application: 
Applications submission is carried out at the host institution, which must check that the applicant meets the set conditions in legislation and in these regulations.

Ranking:

a) Academic and scientific curriculum;
b) Professional curriculum;
c) A text with a maximum of 5 pages describing the research topics in which the candidate is interested in deepening as well as the personal and professional contexts that justify the choice of these themes; 
d) Interview.
 

All applicants must be fluent in Portuguese and in English (reading and listening) and in using the Internet and personal computers.

About the Department of Applied Social Sciences

The Applied Social Sciences Department (DCSA) guarantees, at the NOVA School of Science and Technology, the teaching and the research in areas outside the basic sciences and engineering, giving thus our students a structured training in the field of applied social sciences, what passes by having competency in the fields of expression and communication, the relationship between science / technology / society (history, philosophy and contemporary thought) ethics, work organization and economy, management and entrepreneurship.
