Risk is a transformative element in the lives of people, companies and societies.
An actuary's job is to define, assess and manage risk to optimize the financial impacts resulting from the uncertainty associated with future events. Actuaries work in various areas, traditionally classified under Insurance, Financial, Pension Funds, and Health risks. Pricing, the constitution of adequate financial reserves for future liabilities, evaluate present liabilities related future loss of income, credit risk analysis, the valuation of loans and insurance portfolios, are some examples of the activities carried out by an Actuary.
The curriculum of the Master in Actuarial Mathematics is aligned with the Syllabus of the IAA (International Actuarial Association) and the AAE (Actuarial Association of Europe) ensuring international recognition of NOVA FCT students.

All the curricular units of the Master's Degree are under the responsibility of Professors from the Department of Mathematics with actuarial training and practice.
Several curricular units are lectured in partnership with guests linked to professional activity, to illustrate the relevance of the curriculum in the business world and allow companies to play a more active role in the training of students.
The Master's Degree in Actuarial Mathematics includes a program of sponsors from the insurance industry that allow merit scholarships and other initiatives related to the risk management industry.
With the support of the Sponsors, and in accordance with the regulations in force, the Master's Degree in Actuarial Mathematics includes two Merit Scholarship programmes for students progressing to the 2nd year:
Tuition fees
(50% of the 2nd year tuition fee for students with exceptional academic achievement)
- Until the 2024/25 academic year, 8 Merit Scholarships were awarded
- In 2025/26, 5 Merit Scholarships will be awarded

Tuition fee - Portuguese students: 2000 € / year
Tuition fee - Foreign students: 7000 € / year
Accepted candidates will be required to pay (within 7 consecutive days from the placement date) a non-refundable fee of €300, which will be deducted from the total tuition fee after enrolment.
Non-payment within this period will result in automatic exclusion of the candidate. No exceptions or late payments will be considered. Any payment made after the deadline will not be refunded, and the candidate will remain excluded.
