Master in Maritime Logistics

The Master in Maritime Logistics (MML) is a 1-year innovative international joint master’s degree program delivered by NOVA FCT and the Portuguese Naval Academy.

This program represents a chance to become the professional in maritime logistics the industry is looking for. The program fosters optimal technical and managerial preparation, oriented towards current and future challenges faced by the industry, such as digitalization and multicultural interconnectedness, combined with valuable on-field experience.

Objectives

This degree program assembles a fundamental set of knowledge in Logistics, with additional domains in Industrial Engineering and Management, which allows professionals of the maritime-port industry to develop the relevant research, innovation, technical, digital, and soft skills within the framework of sector related needs, including critical reasoning and a proactive predisposition.

The demand for Blue Skills is expected to increase in the next year’s most significantly in the areas of maritime transport, shipbuilding and shipping services. Especially, young professionals without prior specific education will have the opportunity to join the maritime industry that is expected to be in high demand of skilled specialists.

To whom it is intended

The Master in Maritime Logistics is intended for professionals with at least 5 years of experience that aim to obtain new skills in maritime operations and logistics, or to requalify their job-related skills in the maritime logistics domain, by acquiring a master’s degree.

Career opportunities

The Master in Maritime Logistics will train specialists able to:

  • Understand, optimize and operate intermodal logistics schemes, value and supply chains.
  • Create strategies to face the complexity of the sector and forecast the changes in the demand.
  • Gain an integrated and systemic vision of the various aspects of port’s operation and logistics;
  • Research, propose innovative solutions and organize teams, in different contexts of maritime logistics.

In particular the programme will give some qualification profiles that are not easily available on the market, which are:

  • Integrated logistics Managers.
  • Maritime Supply Chain Specialists.
  • Port Managers.
  • Shipping/Transport Technicians and Managers.

 

Curriculum

Master in Maritime Logistics

The programme starts in January 2023. It lasts for 1 academic year with a total of 60 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System).

The first semester is the curricular part of the program. The courses are configured as weekly-based modules. This structure enables intensive learning approaches with a blend of learning methodologies to develop a critical and a proactive attitude in the analysis and diagnosis of problems, and in the search for innovative solutions.

The modules will be delivered face-to-face at NOVA FCT campus and in the Naval Academy facilities. Working students may join the classes in a hybrid format.

External professors from other universities and industry experts will be giving lectures in the form of seminars/workshops/case studies.

In the second semester, the students can implement a project or engage in a professional internship.

MARLEM - Maritime Logistics Engineering and Management. Project funded by European Union.

The Master in Maritime Logistics is a main outcome of the MarLEM project.

This project aims to fill the existing higher education gaps and needs in Maritime-related Education and Training in order to increase the number of skilled professionals in Maritime Logistics, which is one of the most promising developing clusters of the blue economy.

The project consortium is coordinated by Qualiseg - Engenharia e Gestão Lda (Portugal), while other members are NOVA FCT (Portugal), the Naval Academy (Portugal), University of Strathclyde (United Kingdom), Forum Oceano (Association for the Economy of the Sea, which represents the Portuguese maritime cluster), CERTH (Centre for Research & Technology, Greece), WEGEMT (European association of Universities in Marine Technology and Related Sciences, The Netherlands) and Marine Southeast Limited (maritime cluster, United Kingdom).

M4ML

In the first edition of the Master in Maritime Logistics (2022-2023), the M4ML project provides financial support for the bilateral exchange of students between Portugal and Norway:
4 students will benefit from a one-month internship within Norwegian companies
2 students can receive a 6-month research fellowship
1 student can participate in an international conference

The project consortia is composed by the Naval Academy and NOVA FCT, Qualiseg - Engenharia e Gestão Lda,  and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

The Master in Maritime Logistics is a programme whose students must have at least five years of professional activity, preferably, but not exclusively, in Logistics Operations and Management, such as ship owners/charterers, ports, port terminals, transportation, logistics centres, agents or brokers.

Students must also hold a suitable degree or a professional, scholar or scientific curriculum with sufficient merit. Please see admission requirements in these FAQ.

The Admission Requirements are:

1. At least 5 years of professional activity, preferably in Logistics Operations and Management, such as ship owners/charterers, ports, port terminals, transportation, logistics centres, agents or brokers;

2. One of the following:
a. A Portuguese 1st cycle degree or legal equivalent in the areas of Exact Science, Technology, Engineering, Economics, Business Management, Naval Administration or Geography;
b. A foreign higher academic degree granted, following a 1st cycle of studies in those areas organized according to the Bologna Process, by a State adherent to this Process;
c. Other academic degree in the same areas above that is recognized as meeting the goals of a 1st cycle degree by the Scientific Councils of NOVA SST or of the Naval Academy;
or
d. A professional, scholar or scientific curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the coordinating school (NOVA SST).

3. CEFR B2 level in English (basic fluency).

The master's in Maritime Logistics is a full-time program, with courses delivered as modules weekly. Working students may join the classes in a hybrid format.

Internships will take place at companies, both in Portugal and abroad. NOVA FCT and the Portuguese Naval Academy will provide a number of suitable internship locations and students are encouraged to propose locations of their own will as an alternative to those proposed by the two institutions.

Students may apply to the EEAGrants financed project M4ML, which provides for the financing of mobility actions, namely of a small number of students to Norwegian companies for that purpose.

All internships require the definition of goals and methods by the student and the hosting company. M4ML financed internships will be ranked and selected on this basis.

Candidates must have at least 5 years of professional activity, preferably in Logistics Operations and Management at entities like ship owners/charterers, ports, port terminals, transportation, logistics centres, agents or brokers, etc.

In addition, candidates must hold

  • a 1st cycle higher academic degree or legal equivalent, organized according to the Bologna Process, by a State adherent to this Process, in the areas of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Economics, Business Management, Naval Administration or Geography;
  • or another academic degree in the same areas above, that is recognized as meeting the goals of a 1st cycle degree;
  • or a professional, scholar or scientific curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this master’s degree program.

Proficiency in English is mandatory.

About the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (DEMI) is a permanent organic unit of Nova School of Science and Technology, dedicated to teaching, to fundamental and applied scientific research and to the provision of services in the fields of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.
